The project receives funding under the Horizon 2020 programme: 2.819.693 €
August 2017 – November 2020
Main objective:
The SOCLIMPACT project aims to modelize the regional effects of CC and its socio-economic impact on European Islands for 2030-2100, in the context of the EU blue economy sectors, and assess the corresponding decarbonisation trajectories and adaptation to complement the projections currently available for Europe and strengthening current economic models with a non-market assessment.
Specific objectives:
Develop in-depth comprehension of how CC will impact EU island in different regions of the world, considering their specific vulnerability, and thereby improving existing climate impact models for Europe via the following actions:
- Contribute to the improvement of the economic assessment of climate impact and policies related to the EU blue economy sectors, adopting revealed and declared preference models (DCE), to measure and analyse on the one hand the non-market costs of different climate change scenarios; whilst on the other, the non-market benefits of climate actions (mitigation and adaptation).
- Increase the efficacy of the economic model of climate impact chains via the implementation of an integrated methodological framework (GINFORS, GEM-E3 and non-market indicators), in the analysis of climate induced socio-economic impacts in 11 case studies of EU islands under different climate scenarios for 2030-2100, with an inter-sectorial perspective (EU blue economy sectors), taking one step forward regarding the PESETA project results.
- Facilitate political decision-making related to the climate for blue growth, prioritising and especially projecting more appropriate mitigation, adaptation and risk management, besides creating a common framework for the governance of blue economy sectors with a permanent system of regional information exchange(REIS) for Europe and EU islands.
- Provide accurate regionalised information via innovative tools for decision-making backup for those responsible for formulating policies, professionals, and other relevant interested parties regarding environmental and socio-economic consequences of global CC on EU blue economy; not to mention formulating scientific based recommendations to incentivise the EU islands’ means for long-term transition to a low carbon economy, in addition to strengthening the scientific-political interface, increase social awareness and contributing to the competitiveness of European coastal and maritime industry.
